A battery backup system keeps critical equipment running when mains power fails. It combines rectifiers (chargers) that power the load and charge the battery, a battery bank sized for the required backup time, a controller that monitors everything, and DC distribution. Where AC loads also need backup, an inverter or Rectiverter is added. KPS designs complete battery backup systems in Egypt using Delta Eltek DC power and EnerSys batteries.
Recommended batteries: DataSafe HX+ TPPL UPS battery for data centers and UPS, and PowerSafe OPzV 2V gel battery for solar, telecom and oil & gas.

What a battery backup system includes
- Rectifiers / chargers: hot-swappable Eltek rectifiers convert AC to DC, feed the load and float-charge the batteries.
- Batteries: VRLA, AGM and lead-acid batteries or TPPL batteries sized for the backup time.
- Controller and battery monitoring: Eltek Smartpack controllers manage charging, run battery tests and send alarms. See battery monitoring systems.
- DC distribution: battery and load breakers with low-voltage disconnect, plus MCB distribution panels and PDUs for IT racks.
- AC backup: Rectiverter inverter systems supply backed-up 230 VAC from the same battery.
- Cabinets: indoor power and battery cabinets such as the Eltek IFC, FPC and OFC.
Choosing the right backup system for your site
| Application | Typical system | Typical batteries |
|---|---|---|
| Telecom sites (48 VDC) | Flatpack2 or Flatpack S DC power system | PowerSafe SBS, V-FT or OPzV |
| Data centers and UPS | UPS with high-rate batteries, or a 380 VDC system | DataSafe HX, HX+ or NPX |
| Substations and industry (110 / 220 VDC) | Flatpack2 110–125V, 220V or IBB industrial systems | PowerSafe OPzS or OPzV |
| Sites with AC and DC loads | Rectiverter system | PowerSafe SBS or OPzV |
| Emergency lighting | Central battery system | PowerSafe OPzV, SBS or Genesis |
| Off-grid and hybrid sites | Solar hybrid power system | PowerSafe OPzV, TS or PV Bloc |
How backup time is sized
Battery capacity depends on the load, the required autonomy, the allowed end voltage, the battery temperature and an ageing margin. As a simple example, a 2 kW load on a 48 V system draws about 42 A, so four hours of backup needs roughly 167 Ah before design margins. KPS sizes stationary lead-acid batteries using recognised methods such as IEEE 485, adding correction factors for temperature and end-of-life capacity so the system still meets its backup time in year 10, not only on day one.

Battery Backup Systems: FAQs
What is a battery backup system?
A battery backup system is a rectifier (charger), a battery bank, a controller and distribution that keep critical loads powered when mains fails. An inverter or Rectiverter can be added to back up AC loads as well.
How long can a battery backup system run?
Backup time depends on the load and the battery capacity. Telecom and industrial systems are typically designed for 2 to 8 hours, data center UPS systems for 5 to 15 minutes. KPS sizes the battery for the autonomy you need, including temperature and ageing margins.
Which batteries are used in telecom battery backup systems?
Telecom sites usually use 12 V front-terminal VRLA batteries such as EnerSys PowerSafe SBS or V-FT (TPPL), or 2 V PowerSafe OPzV gel cells for long backup times.
Can one system back up both AC and DC loads?
Yes. Eltek Rectiverter systems supply 48 VDC (or 110 / 220 VDC) and backed-up 230 VAC from the same battery bank, without a separate UPS and inverter.
Does KPS install battery backup systems in Egypt?
Yes. KPS designs, supplies, installs and maintains battery backup systems across Egypt for telecom, data center, oil and gas, utility and industrial customers.
