Lead-acid batteries remain the standard for stationary backup power in telecom, UPS, utility and solar systems. They come in three main families: flooded (vented) batteries, valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries in AGM or gel form, and advanced TPPL batteries. As an authorized EnerSys distributor, KPS supplies all three in Egypt and helps you choose the right one.

Recommended: for data center and UPS backup, the DataSafe HX+ VRLA AGM battery (TPPL, 12+ year design life). For solar, telecom and oil & gas, the PowerSafe OPzV 2V gel battery (20-year design life).

VRLA vs AGM: what is the difference?

VRLA describes any sealed, valve-regulated lead-acid battery that recombines its gases and needs no water. AGM (absorbent glass mat) and gel are the two ways of holding the electrolyte inside a VRLA battery. So every AGM battery is a VRLA battery, but not every VRLA battery is AGM. TPPL batteries are a high-performance type of AGM VRLA battery.

How to choose a lead-acid battery

  • Discharge time: UPS systems need high power for minutes (DataSafe), telecom and utilities need energy for hours (PowerSafe).
  • Temperature: lead-acid life roughly halves for every 8–10 °C above 20–25 °C, so hot sites benefit from gel, TPPL or temperature-controlled rooms.
  • Cycling: solar and poor-grid sites cycle daily and need cyclic designs such as OPzV, TS or SBS XC+.
  • Space and terminals: 12 V front-terminal blocks suit telecom racks, 2 V cells suit large battery rooms.
  • Maintenance access: flooded batteries need water topping and ventilation; VRLA batteries do not need water.

VRLA, AGM and Lead-Acid Batteries: FAQs

What is a VRLA battery?

A VRLA (valve-regulated lead-acid) battery is a sealed lead-acid battery that recombines the gases produced during charging, so it needs no water addition. AGM and gel are the two VRLA types.

Is an AGM battery the same as a VRLA battery?

AGM is one type of VRLA battery, in which the electrolyte is absorbed in a glass mat. Gel batteries are the other VRLA type. TPPL batteries are an advanced AGM VRLA design.

What is the difference between flooded lead-acid and VRLA batteries?

Flooded (vented) batteries have liquid electrolyte, need regular water topping and good ventilation, and offer very long life. VRLA batteries are sealed, need no water and can be installed in racks and cabinets close to the equipment.

How long do VRLA batteries last?

Design life ranges from about 5 to 20 years depending on the range and operating temperature. For example, EnerSys PowerSafe OPzV gel batteries have a 20-year design life at reference temperature.

Where can I buy VRLA and AGM batteries in Egypt?

KPS is an authorized EnerSys distributor in Egypt supplying VRLA AGM, gel, TPPL and flooded batteries with sizing, installation and maintenance.
