In Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas, batteries need ex-proof protection: charging can release hydrogen, and terminals, fuses and connections can spark. Oil and gas sites, refineries, offshore platforms and chemical plants therefore install batteries in certified ex-proof battery boxes, or use batteries that are certified themselves. KPS supplies ATEX and IECEx explosion-proof equipment in Egypt as an authorized BARTEC and Pharos Marine distributor.

Ex-proof battery options
- Ex-proof battery boxes: Pharos Marine Zone 1/2 certified battery boxes house battery banks for hazardous-area solar and backup systems.
- ATEX batteries: ODYSSEY Extreme Series ATEX batteries are supplied in enclosures that meet ATEX/IECEx Ex e certification for engine starting.
- Battery banks for solar: PowerSafe OPzV gel batteries installed in certified battery boxes.
- Ex enclosures for chargers and distribution: BARTEC Ex d flameproof and Ex e increased-safety enclosures.
Complete ex-proof DC power systems
A typical hazardous-area power system combines an ex-proof solar panel field (Pharos Marine SPEX Zone 1 modules), an ex-proof solar charger (Victron SmartSolar MPPT installed in an Ex d enclosure), certified battery boxes and a flameproof protection hub with remote monitoring. See the full design on our hazardous-area solar power page.
How to select an ex-proof battery solution
- Zone: Zone 1 requires at least category 2G (EPL Gb) equipment, Zone 2 at least 3G (Gc).
- Gas group and temperature class: match the site classification, for example IIC T4 or T5.
- Ventilation: battery boxes must manage hydrogen released during charging.
- Ingress protection and ambient temperature: outdoor and offshore sites need high IP ratings and heat tolerance.
- Monitoring: remote battery monitoring avoids entering the hazardous zone for checks.
Ex-Proof Batteries and Battery Boxes for Hazardous Areas: FAQs
What is an ex-proof battery box?
An ex-proof battery box is a certified enclosure that allows batteries to be installed safely in a hazardous area by preventing sparks or hot surfaces from igniting the surrounding gas and by managing hydrogen from charging.
Do batteries in hazardous areas need ATEX certification?
Equipment installed in a classified zone must be certified for that zone. Batteries are either installed in a certified ex-proof battery box or supplied as certified units, such as ODYSSEY Extreme Series ATEX batteries with Ex e enclosures.
What is the difference between Ex d and Ex e?
Ex d (flameproof) enclosures contain any internal explosion so it cannot ignite the surrounding atmosphere. Ex e (increased safety) prevents sparks and hot surfaces from occurring in the first place.
Can solar panels and solar chargers be used in Zone 1?
Yes, if they are certified. KPS supplies ATEX-certified Pharos Marine SPEX solar panels and installs MPPT solar chargers inside certified Ex d enclosures for Zone 1 sites.
Where can I buy ex-proof batteries and battery boxes in Egypt?
KPS supplies ex-proof battery boxes, ATEX batteries and complete hazardous-area power systems in Egypt as an authorized BARTEC and Pharos Marine distributor.
